All relationships, whether friendly, romantic, business, or social on another level, are relatively easy to begin or enter into, but sometimes costly to maintain and sometimes very difficult to get out of without a lot of damage.
Friendships, for example, simply by their very existence, place social demands on the parties involved. They are alliances and loyalty in the form of supportive and collaborative action is expected. For this reason, friendships, and all relationships, place demands on time and resources just by being. So, it makes a lot of sense to be discriminating about who we associate with and develop sophisticated techniques for
"vetting" candidates for association.
